Summer term in Turtles
Turtles have shown a huge interest in planting and growing seeds, it seems like lots of you were busy in the garden over the holidays!
Therefore this term we will be reading the story Jasper's beanstalk and teaching him how to plant a bean successfully and telling him how a plant grows and what it needs to survive.
In order to support our learning of this topic we will also be visiting a local garden centre to explore and discover other interesting plants and flowers.
We will also be preparing for Semley's sports day and starting our training for the running races, a very exciting day to look forward to!
Please keep an eye on this page to see more about our growing topic and of course you are welcome to pop into the ever busy classroom and see what we are up to.
On Wednesday 14th June Turtles went to Tesco in Shaftesbury to learn about food and where it comes from.
We had a wonderful time baking bread in the bakery and tasting a variety of foods from around the world.
Take a look at our photos to see more about exploring food.
During the week beginning 22nd May Turtles took part in the whole schools fitness fun week. We discovered, experimented, tested and learnt a great deal about keeping fit and healthy in fun ways. Take a look at these photos to see some of the things we did. You can also see more of what we have done in the school hall on Saturday 10th June for the Semley village fete.
The photos here show us dancing and learning about our muscles with Caroline the dance lady, Hoola hooping with Kia, making healthy packed lunches and exploring new activities to keep us fir and healthy.
On Tuesday 16th May Turtles took a trip to Orchard Park in Gillingham.
We learnt so much useful information to support our growing topic and even met a toad who has taken up residence in the pond area in the garden centre!
While researching which animals make good pets, Turtles took a trip to Church farm in Semley. Here we learnt lots of interesting things about cows and how they are useful animals to keep but not appropriate as pets! "They stink!".
Mrs Bowerman and and her son Jacob gave us a tour of the dairy farm where we pretended to be cows in the milking parlour and met the cows and their calves, one had only just been born! Have a look at our pictures to see for yourself.
This week in turtles we have been reading DEAR ZOO and thinking about zoo animals.
We have been thinking about why they wouldn’t make good pets and if we were to send a zoo animals to someone what size crate will it need?!
We have been measuring animals and crates to solve problems about sending animals in the post!
We have been role playing as zoo keepers and animals. Take a look…
We have been thinking about which animals make the best pets and have continued discussions about wild animals.
We had a few visitors in the classroom this week which are wild animals but also can be pets. Zoolab are a company that visit schools and let children handle minibeasts and small unfamiliar animals.
We had a very interesting afternoon learning new facts about new animals, some of which we found a little creepy!
We are the reception class at Semley and are always so busy...
This term in Turtles class has already started with a BANG as we listen to story of The Gunpowder plot and explore fireworks in our learning.
Having spent last term learning about people who help us; nurses, doctors, and dentists the children have been thinking about people who would help us in an emergency to do with a fire or an explosion.
We have already had a visit from Tisbury fire and rescue service who showed us their fire engine and let us squirt the hose.
Following this we then had a visit from Wiltshire fire and rescue service who helped us learn how to be safe in our home and keep our family safe from fire.
As a result, our theme this term will be fire and fire safety. We hope you are able to pop in and see what we are exploring in our learning. As well as this we will of course be preparing for the huge event in December (shhhh, Christmas! it seems to early to mention it!) where we will be practising for the nativity show in the church.
Watch this space for photos, updates and exciting events that have happened in the classroom.
